Does anyone have any suggestions for keyboard adaptations that could be helpful for a Year 3 pupil with a diagnosis of athetoid cerebral palsy? Her movements are jerky and hard to control so I've thought of jumbo keyboards and enabling 'sticky keys' but would be grateful for any further suggestions.
Would she be better off with a switch and Clicker? Otherwise a keyguard might help if she is striking keys accidentally.
I too, wondered about a key guard which you can get for Big Keys keyboard. Or a switch to toggle along. Or a joystick?
Thank you so much Jo and Joanne- your helpful suggestions are duly noted.
The pupil is cognitively able and gets frustrated that she can't write as much as her peers. I think longer term she will need to use speech to text apps or a scribe to achieve her potential.
As suggested, keyguard might help esp. if she needs to rest her hand as well.
Also try Filter keys in the windows settings - introduces a slight delay in acceptance e.g. 0.1 sec once key is pressed (does depend if she can hold down keys).
Word prediction might help too in reducing the amount of key presses. Lightkey is pretty good and she would just need to hit Tab to accept the suggestion.
There is word prediction built into Windows called "Text Suggestions", which is obviously free, but I wouldn't recommend for this situation as she will have to use arrow keys or a mouse click to select words.
