Hello all,

It has been suggested I seek thoughts from this forum about experience of access arrangements - extra time. A BATOD (British Association of Teachers of Deaf Children and Young People) member is seeking feedback to this query.

"I have a student who currently has 50% additional time, a reader, a scribe and supervised rest breaks due to hearing loss and physical needs.
<p style="font-weight: 300;">He sits his exams in a separate room, on his own, as he has a reader and scribe. School are saying that he must stay in the exam until the end of his 50% additional time and will not be permitted to leave during additional time even if the student and assistant are both happy that he has completed it.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 300;">Parents and myself feel that he should be able to leave during additional time if he has finished as he would not be disturbing any other students, being in a room on his own.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 300;">Does anyone have any experience of this please?"</p>
Thank you in advance

Teresa

Hi

As far as I am aware the rules for exams ( with extra time or not) is that students must stay for 1 hour after the official start time.

I have a room with about 30 students entitled to extra time who have a range of needs inc ASD, pd, Processing speeds etc. They all stay for the statws time and then can chose to use thier extra time or not and can leave whenever they feel they are finished within thw extra time period.

The JCQ ICE book and Reasonable Adjustments book have the details.

To just add to my post;

I am in a mainstream setting and have had difficult encounters with parents who believed we should have given them the 'full time' allowed and should have given them every opportunity to add more if needed.

Perhaps if the parents are also in agreement they could put it in writting to the school.

Hi,

My understanding is that this is up to the centre. When I was first involved with access arrangements (I've been an assessor and senco for several years), pupils often left when done. This seems to rarely be the case now and is no longer the case where I work. Some schools allow leaving early after 25% if it won't disturb others.

One aspect of 50% ET is it is actually 26-50% and you are meant to apply for only as much as is needed. This means there is a potential argument that if you are done and able to leave before the end, then the AA needs adjusting to be lower e.g. 40% showing a student stayed the whole time supports keeping the 50% in place.

If that much isn't needed then having a bit less can be good. Rest breaks and ET over 25% can lead to very long and tiring exams otherwise.

I hope that helps a bit. Happy to help more if I can.

Emma

Hello

I have a strong feeling that he may of course leave. He odes not need to sit there unnecessarily. Its absurd. Let me double check and will come back to you. Also Nick Lait at JCQ would be able to confirm this
