SMA Screening of all babies announced by DHSC

From October 2027 every baby born in England will be screened for Spinal Muscular Atrophy, a rare muscle-wasting disease. SMA affects about one in 10,000 babies; usually, about 48 born a year in the UK. Those identified at birth can then be given effective gene-therapy, thus growing up without any of its debilitating symptoms.  Scotland began universal screening in March this year, although in England only 70% of areas have been screening, so extremely welcome news.
