A pupil of mine (cerebral palsy GMFCS Level 1) is in Year 7 and has just received her mid-year grades. Her levels in PE have been assessed as below expected level which she finds upsetting as she always engages with enthusiasm. With adaptations such as sensitive pairing and reduced distances she is able to participate fully in the lessons, but her teachers feel that she cannot be awarded the higher grades because she is not able meet their success criteria. Her mother says this appears to be discriminatory and has asked for my opinion. I'd be grateful if any of you have encountered a similar situation and how it was resolved. I'd also be grateful for any signposting to find out how exam bodies award grades in the practical elements of GCSE PE.

Many thanks,

Sue Clark

Our PE department have always been very supportive and we have assessed together with our school values in mind (resilience, trust, responsibility, courage, kindness and respect) We look at the specific skills so for badminton can they accurately hit the shuttlecock to an area on the court. There is some information here https://paralympics.org.uk/ regarding adjustments like the size of the court etc. I haven't experienced a child do a GCSE but have researched it for one, there is information here https://support.ocr.org.uk/hc/en-gb/articles/360034015992-GCSE-PE-We-have-a-disabled-student-and-we-need-to-apply-for-an-activity-adjustment about how to apply for Activity Adjustment Request.

Hope this helps

Hi Sue

I've suggested my colleague Sarah Osborne responds to you as she has had lots of success supporting Secondary Schools with PE. In the meantime have you spotted Jo Evans' earlier post with this link: Inclusion 2024 Inclusive PE hub (activityalliance.org.uk) ?

this is from my colleague, Mary Osborne:

There seem to be two things to consider in how these gradings are acquired - the National Curriculum (age related) and examination board's assessment criteria. Years 7 to 11 are most likely assessed on the second of these.

The criteria for assessments are available online. They would need to know the specific examinations board used by the school and the particular award they are working towards to look these up, for example AQA GCSE PE specifications - https://filestore.aqa.org.uk/resources/pe/specifications/AQA-8582-SP-2016.PDF (see pages 49-50 in particular). This shows that 40% of the GCSE is made up of marks from three physical activities.

There are a range of sports that can be used for assessment including things such a boccia. For most secondary schools, they are likely to find it difficult to arrange many of these as they won’t be part of their teacher training or within the familiarity of many of the PE teachers, but this is something they need to address as a school, and seek support for from other agencies if necessary, e.g. advisory teachers/OTs/Physios. Sport England may also be able to advise.
