Hi all,

Does anyone have any written guidance/policy that they would not mind sharing, on assisted technology assessments and aids, including funding of the equipment. Also on the role of the AT specialist advisory teacher - is this a specialist role in other local authorities or a combined role within PD and sensory or cognition & learning teams?

Many thanks

Gurby

It's an element of our role as PD specialist teachers in Warwickshire. No specific funding. Our OT's also do some but they too do not have a budget for it

Hi Gurby

Natspec runs an Assistive Technology service - TechAbility - which provides all sorts of free advice, guidance and resources including the TechAbility Standards which take you through a self assessment process to check whether your AT is meeting the needs of learners. You can contact techability@natspec.org.uk to ask about Job Descriptions for AT specialists. The website has further information https://www.techability.org.uk/ and the free webinars and training is available on the YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlQNUqK0ICK7tEd8rGaBmFUF5Lu4yyH-p

Hi.  In Essex we will fund specialist equipment/software that costs over £30 for mainstream schools and is child specific - i.e., not Ipads, Kindles or generic laptops.  This is on the proviso that it has been recommended by a specialist teacher and/or OT. Eye Gaze and AAC tech is a little more complex as it might involve joint funding by Health or Social Care.  We sometimes assess the need ourselves as STs but will sometimes work jointly with the OT to look at positioning etc.  The other sensory teams (HI and VI) may work slightly  differently and we no longer have a cognition and learning team.  We have a draft 'memorandum of understanding' rather than a policy as such, which I am happy to send you if you want to contact me at jo.lambert@essex.gov.uk

We do not have policies to share regarding funding. The role of the STA AT here is within the PD team. But a separate role from the STA PDs. Our website may help www.hants.gov.uk/stas
