Hi,

I support children and young people with spina bifida, which causes mobility and continence difficulties, and I'm looking for recommendations for children's books about continence and being different in school. I have ERIC, Coloplast and LoFric books for children already but would like a book which is less technical and more in tune with SEMH for 6-10 year olds. Thanks, Jan from Shine charity.

Hello

I have a list of books that promote disability awareness which may be useful to explore for this pupil. I have added an approximate age range to each book where I could find this information. Some you can look inside online at Amazon.

  • Emmanuel’s Dream by Laurie Ann Thompson and Sean Qualls (age 4-8)
  • Max the Champion by Sean Stockdale, Alexandra Strick and Ros Asquith (age 4-8)
  • The Littlest Inventor by Mandi Mathis (age 6-9)
  • Siggy’s Parade by Blanche Dudley (age 4-7)
  • Wings for Kevin Paperback by Marilee Donivan (age primary)
  • Minnie and Max are OK!: A Story to Help Children Develop a Positive Body Image Hardcover by Chris Calland (age 3-7)
  • A First Look At: Disability: Don't Call Me Special Paperback by Pat Thomas (age 6-11)
  • Can I Tell You about Cerebral Palsy?: A Guide for Friends, Family and Professionals by Marion Stanto
  • Ugly by Robert Hoge (age 8-12)
  • What's Different About You? by Heather Steiger (primary)
  • It's Okay to be Different Paperback by Todd Parr (age 4-7)
  • Wonder Paperback by R J Palacio (age 9-11)
  • Extraordinary Paperback by Miriam Spitzer Franklin (age 8-12)
  • Ade Adepitan: A Paralympian's Story: Band 16/Sapphire (Collins Big Cat) by Ade Adepitan (age 9-10)

I will be interested to hear of any specific books if you find any - so far I have only used the charities you mentioned for information.

Kind regards

Nicky Rollinson

Hi Nicky,

Thanks so much for these suggestions, which I will add to my reading list about confidence and physical disability.

Best regards,

Jan

Hi both,

This list (plus any other titles people add) would be a great resource for the Effective Practice Hub - would people be happy if we created a list of 'recommended texts to support pupils with disabilities?' We'd of course name all contributors.

Many thanks,

Kate

Hello Kate

Sounds a great idea - I have some more that are for younger ages (I didn't add above as it was for a child aged from 6) and I am going to see if I can find some older texts too (hopefully in the next few weeks if I get time! If not I will do in January). How shall I pass on the information to you?

Thanks

Nicky
