Hi

A local resource base is under threat as the assumption is being made that because the base very effectively supports its pupils to spend nearly 100% of time  in mainstream lessons , there is no reason why these very complex pupils can not attend there local school. The resource base is supporting pupils with complex physical/medical needs, those using AAC and those with VI , some students have all of these needs together. If anyone can direct me to any evidence on outcomes or cost comparisons between a resource base  and generic mainstream school I would be very grateful.

Many Thanks

Liza

Hi Liza

We’ve never had Resource Bases as such for PD / medical, however at secondary we used to have a school in each of our five areas with enhanced facilities for learners with PD. Over the last 15-20 years pupils have increasingly wanted to stay with the peers they have been with at primary and parents have wanted more local provision. As transport in a largely rural County has become so costly, it has made sense to invest over time in improving access in all schools. In terms of progress and attainment we fare well nationally and in comparison with statistical neighbours; so I can’t say there has been any adverse impact. The caveat in my opinion is that LAs need to continue to invest in specialist advisory teaching to support and challenge practice as appropriate.  Hopefully pdnet is seen as fulfilling a role in supporting that practice.

Hope that helps.

Jane
