Can colleagues say whether their LA grants them the top end of the SEN allowance on their salary? My LA only pays the lower level on the spine, refuses me R &R and TLRs. I have some 17 years experience both running a specialist PD Resource base and now being an advisory teacher for the LA. It would be interesting to know whether this is in line with other LAs.

When I worked in an LA school, everyone I knew about got the lower level. When I was considering changing job and looking at roles leading a small team or coordinating in some way, most schools in the LA either gave lower level SEN or TLR, I don't think I ever saw higher SEN and the  SEN+TLR roles were things like head of KS 3/4 in an all through special school. I am now working in an independent school so it may have changed over the last couple of years (although the job ads I have browsed from time to time suggest not)

Hi Eve

Different LAs will have different policies on this but it has to be set out in the Pay Policy for centrally managed staff on School Teachers Pay & Conditions; ask your HR to see a copy.  In my LA all specialist teachers get the minimum amount; there is then a mid point which is given to staff with an appropriate post-graduate qualification e.g. SENCo award, mandatory hearing or QTVI qualification, diploma in Autism, SEND; the highest is for staff with an additional qualification e.g. staff who have dual qualifications or PhD.

There are definitely individuals on the upper SEN pay within my LA. This may well vary between schools with so many being academies now.

I received an additional SEN allowance when I gained my mandatory QTVI status.
