Hi All

Following on  from the recent Midlands regional group meeting where we discussed  difficulties  in finding school placements for some learners with a physical disability we would be interested in   your  view/experience  of ;

1. the barriers to  having a school placement for some learners with PD

2.  the role of  the accessibility plan - They have been around for almost 2 decades .What is your experience of them? Has anyone come across  good practice where   the development of school provision for a learner with PD  is linked to an accessibility plan?

3. examples of good practice where a small amount of funding  has  made a great deal of difference

Please share your thoughts  - it would be really inter sting to find out what is happening out there in different counties.

Thanks

Di

Hi Di

Accessibility plans are one of my constant moans. I have found that some schools simply don't have one or have one that is out of date with none of the environmental access targets met. One of my CPD targets this year is to find some good examples and draw up a best practice document to support schools develop their plan for CYP with physical disabilities. Once my team has signed it off, I will send it to PDnet to add to resources.

Hi Di,

Similar experience to Sam. I think part of the problem is when there are shared responsibilities. Some of my SENDCOs see this as a leadership/site manager role. It's similar to Care Plans- something which often sits with Medical Officers.

I wonder whether the LA should also share some of the responsibility and publish a local offer re Accessible schools/those with personal care suites etc?

Obviously, its all inextricably linked to funding too.

2 decades-gosh!

Kate

Thanks Kate and Sam

My experiences mirror yours. It is a great idea to draw up a "best practice" document - I am sure pdnet colleagues would be interested in this. Following up on your idea Kate, does anyone know of any LA   that publishes information about schools in their Local Area? D
