I am looking to get advice on what questions to ask when looking round a university and what facilities are best to look out for when visiting and choosing a university place for a young adult with a disability.
Accomodation
Level of adaptation in room - bed, bathroom/wet room, space for wheelchair and other equipment, power to charge it where the space to store it is located. Adaptations to kitchen if self catering.
Academic space
Library access - height of shelves with books - support available? e-book versions available of texts?
access to and within labs/lecture halls offices etc - is there room for that learners chair/other equipment - have they considered other disabled users at same time?
Movement between/around
is there enough time?
how far is the accessible route - it can be a lot more than double the ambulant route! and what they think is accessible may not be for an individual chair
state of pavements between - not under uni control but worth checking area a s we had one road that was impassable and added 15 minutes to journey to go round.
staff to support
EHCPs don't go to University so funding doesn't go either - Uni funding needs to be in place to cover learning support. LA funding in place to support care needs - need assessment from LA.
