Hello, does anyone have any experience of a pupil completing the year 1 phonics check using eye gaze? The pupil is cognitively very able but the class teacher is unsure how best to administer the test. If she holds up the word for him to sound out, he will just be copying the word into his device (probably using phonics for all) which isn't really testing the same skill.... Thanks in advance!

For any of our students using Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices, e.g. Grid (used in phonics for all) or Proloquo we use the keyboard screens on their devices for them to demonstrate their ability to segment a word into the phonemes. At early stages it seems to work quite well and becomes more challenging when they move onto diagraphs. Some AAC apps can be switched to sound the phoneme when letters are selected rather than speaking the letter name.
