Evac-chair warning

Hi We have encountered a serious problem with a particular evac-chair in two separate schools, so I wanted to inform others about this and see if any other professionals had been involved with similar incidents. The chair is an Evac + Chair 300H MK5 - which I believe is a leading brand and very popular in schools due to its competitive price. The chair works using tracks that feature rubber friction belts, allowing for a single-person operation. It is the rubber friction belts that have caused us problems; if the chairs are not used for extended periods, the rubber can warp around the rotating wheels positioned at each end of the belt. This means that the friction that slows the chair as it moves down stairs is compromised and the chair can 'run away' from the operator. After the incidents the manufacturer is happy to provide new friction belts. However, to reduce the risk of incidents, we have found that regular practise that shifts the position of the belts works well, so wanted everyone to be aware. For instance, a local school that practises evacuation every half term have not had a problem - this is what we've always recommended to maintain staff skill levels but, as you can see, it also helps maintain the effectiveness of the equipment! The two incidents referred to both involved chairs that had been stored /mounted on the wall without being used for a long time, i.e. the schools had no need for evac-chairs for a number of years since installation but, when they needed them, they were found to be faulty. As such, if you are involved in with a pupil who needs evac-chairs; it would be useful to check the chairs in the school aren't faulty and inform staff of the importance of checking / using the chairs regularly to maintain their function as well as keeping staff skill levels high.
