Hello All,

Now that there are some noises being made about a staggered return to school we have been tasked with contributing to some SEND training for school staff on how to support students with Physical Difficulties.

The kinds of things we are thinking of are:

  • Risk assessment
  • When are the times you can't socially distance e.g. due to care, therapy, handling needs
  • What you do at these times …..

Does anyone know of any guidance anywhere on these kind of issues that we could reference please?

Hi I'm currently listening to a YouTube webinar on 'mitigating the impact of Covid-19 on students with additional needs'. Prof Adam Boddison Nasen CEO just did a really good speech about how to support staff and pupils, he shared 5 slides and said they are on the Nasen website. He made a lot of sense and was refreshingly honest. Hope this helps.

Hi Everyone,

Erica Do you have a link to the YouTube webinar please?

I would be interested in what is being suggested.

When personal care/moving and handling support requires people to assist this will not be possible to do so social distancing - PPE will be needed I would have thought in these circumstances. And often more than 1 adult is needed to support the child.

Do we know where we stand with the most vulnerable children? I have a family under huge strain - single parent, child needs full personal care support, very bright but struggling to manage home schooling and parent scared about being expected to return to work. The virus would cost my student his life. Parent has no carers coming in as she is frightened and has another not at risk child but clearly wouldn't want to send this child to school as she would be in contact with others and therefore at risk of bringing the virus into the family home.

There are other families in similar situations on my caseload too.

We are facing concerns over equipment - will it still be appropriate/has the child grown or their needs changed following lengthy times at home? Can equipment be ordered and delivered in time for return/transition and is it safe to be used or will it need time in quarantine.

Staff training is going to be needed in many cases but this can not always be delivered virtually - will school allow external visitors?

Employing new team memebers- interviews? My team in Derbyshire have done Skype interviews last week for HI post.

Sorry I am just spilling out my concerns and frustrations. I feel sure there will be a wave of concerned parents getting in touch very soon and I am concerned for everyone's mental health too.

Hi Erica,

I've had a look at the NASEN site but couldn't find any slides? I would be interested in seeing them.

many thanks
