Hi All

A year 10 pupil has a recent diagnosis of Tourettes which can result in leg tremors that can cause him to collapse. This has never happened in school only at home. Mum wants all his lessons moving to the ground floor in case this happens in school. The school is not equipped with any lifts and all the science labs are on the second floor. The pupil is currently managing the stairs with a TA escort but Mum is not happy with this and complained to the LA. I have to go into school this week to meet mum and staff. Will suggest a risk assessment and care plan but any other advice welcome!  Thanks.

Sorry, I can't really help as we don't usually accept CYP with Tourettes Syndrome onto the PNI caseload.  I would be interested to hear what other Authorities do, as well as the outcome of your meeting, though.  Is there an Occupational Therapist involved?  I suppose the argument is whether this is a 'reasonable' adjustment or whether there is another possible way forward...

Hi Heather,

As some classes cannot be moved to the ground floor it is about carrying out a risk assessment and ensuring safe systems are in place.  We can not eliminate risk - he could collapse and have an injury even on the ground floor. You need to bring the risks down to an "acceptable" level. If you email me I can forward some points to add to the RA, my email is gurby.sandhu@durham.gov.uk
