Hi

Looking for speech to text software for a 10 year old with CP who has nystagmus and can't easily track for reading. Finding she can't complete the training programmes properly and so the software doesn't understand her. Anyone recommend a programme they've used before successfully or know of one that doesn't require the child to read massive amounts of text in order to train it? It's for use with a Windows laptop if that helps.

Thanks

Morning. The main piece of Windows software is Dragon Naturally Speaking. It now only needs the student to read about 12 sentences. Which you could screen snip and practise beforehand. When using Dragon if individual words aren't dictated correctly you can 'train' for those specific words.

It can still be frustrating. Particularly with any kind of unclear speech. It will then mean a great deal of training. Obviously also in schools the environment can be too noisy. Has you tried the free options i.e. MS Office 365 dictate on the Home ribbon, or the microphone on an apple keyboard for iphones / ipads etc. Just as a starting point to assess if you think this could be workable?

I asked our Lead VI teacher and she said the dictate function in Word is now reasonably good - I use it myself sometimes and the microphone quality does make a difference...

Have you looked at Dictation in the Microsoft suite?

The beauty of this is that Immersive Reader can be used to read back the text.

The text and background can be adapted for individual need and the written words are highlighted as they are read.

Google Classroom/Docs has similar addons.

Does your local authority have an assistive technology Assessment service? There are likely to be a number of factors to consider when choosing the right thing for her.
I haven’t quite gleaned from your description if the reading programme (which I assume is software?) can’t understand her speech or her typing?

Happy  to see if I can help if you don’t get the answer from the expertise here.
