I have noticed that there is a real gap in knowledge for staff who deliver PE lessons. A lot of our children either do not participate in PE lessons, or are not reaching their true potential due to staff not knowing how to make the lessons accessible for them.

Does anyone here have any advice? Documents...websites... or training providers? I would love to get some training organised for staff in our City!

Hi

Try googling Inclusion 2024 to access information / resources from the Youth Sports Trust

Thanks

Hi Louise This issue was highlighted on the news this morning with a disabled athlete making the point that many young elite sports people, during their PE at school are stuck on the sidelines refereeing or other such things. You’ll find an Inclusive PE self-assessment on https://education.activityalliance.org.uk and also access to resources and support. There are schools who do a good job, usually by offering pupils the opportunity to focus on fitness and skills rather than playing competitive sports. We had a focus on this in one of our annual conferences probably ten years ago now at Loughborough. We could revisit this as a theme for 2025 if members feel it would be helpful.

The response below is from K-J Dalley in Essex, who is a member of PDNet Home Counties and East. She has asked me to post this as she has struggled to add her reply to the forum.

Yes, I agree. In Essex we run our own PE workshop for both primary and secondary schools each term. This is a county wide offer for schools on caseload and by invite only. There are some good providers out there, Sainsbury’s Active Kids are still offering free courses, Panathlon have a vast array of ideas for activities and games on their website – primary, secondary and at home. Jasmine Real PE is the only wholistic package I have found which offers primary schools lesson plans, staff training, teaching resources and videos of the activities at a price (I am not on commission, just look around to see what is available). Obviously the sports health check in the School Games Mark also directs to training.

To add to the replies above, also try searching for the Inclusion Spectrum and STEP model (where you change the Space, Task, Equipment and/ or People) to make physical activities more accessible.
