Hello all,

I am working with a child in Year 5 and we're looking at his transition to secondary school. He has achondroplasia. One of the issues he will face is the increased travel around a much larger school and resulting tiredness. He is very keen to use a Segway to get around as he has seen the actor, Lenny Rush, using one. Has anyone had any experience of procuring a Segway (or similar) as a mobility aid? Does anyone know if it's possible to get one with a disability badge? I'm aware that under the Highways Act, Segways are not permitted for use on pavements etc. so I wondered about the implications of using one in a school. If anyone has any experience at all in this area, I'd love to hear from you.

Many thanks,

Kelly

Hi Kelly,

I am Lenny's specialist teacher. He is now in Year 10 and has used his Segway throughout the school. He also uses it outside on pavements. He has a sign on it to say it is his mobility aid so everyone can see why it is needed and how it is being used. It is a while ago he got his first one, but I think the family paid for it themselves - I can ask if you would like me to. They have recently got a new one and they told me they are quite difficult to purchase. I am very happy to ask him any specific questions you may have - contact me directly - nicky.rollinson@essex.gov.uk
