Hi there,

I have had a query from a parent, they have a 16 year old daughter who wants to do art at college, and they have found a SEN foundation art course that is 10 hours a week- does it count as full time education? As she has SEND and struggles with fatigue and has a lot of hospital appointments, 10 hours is all she can a manage and for her that is full on. Would this count as full time education? The family are struggling to find the answer to this question as could affect PIP, tax credit funding etc but for the young person this is all they can manage. any help gratefull recieved 🙂

Thank you

Hi Joanne
Is   the 10 hours a week all the course or just the teaching , face to face part? It may be the student needs to also undertake additional  hours of self study outside of the 10 hours .

The full time requirement seems to be 540 hours of planned time per year. This is about 14 hours per week. I'm not aware of any reduction available in these hours but am checking.

This shows that 540 hours is the minimum definition for full time study.
It also states that until a pupil has achieved GSCE 4 or above in English and Maths they must continue to study them, though can be doing a stepping stone qualification if havent got L3 yet, if they are on a course of over 150 hours per year. This can be avoided if it can be shown the learners SEND is such that they cannot access such learning.

hello thank you so much for the rsponses! the teaching part is 10 hours as far as I am aware but I would expect there would be some self study so that is an angle to explore. Robin thank you for checking further if 10 hours is possible. This forum is so helpful 🙂
